What are the treatments available for bird flu?

Avian influenza or bird flu is a kind of influenza that occurs in wild birds.  This highly contagious virus can be passed into domestic birds and poultry. Usually human infection of bird flu is very rare. However, in case of a major outbreak of bird flu in poultry, the disease can spread to humans, such as the people handling the birds directly, who often become unsuspecting candidates for bird flu infection.
Having already determined that bird flu was highly contagious in birds, scientists became concerned with mutated forms of the disease. Possible mutations of the disease and the subsequent pandemic that could result from it became the major medical concern at the time. Later it was determined that normal influenza drugs could be used in treating bird flu. However, the virus became resistant to these drugs very quickly. Drugs like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) were used to lessen the effects of the flu and prescribed to be taken within 48 hours of infection. People living in the same household as a patient of bird flu were required to take oseltamivir as well. Experts dictated that infected persons should be immediately put into isolation. Often severely affected persons were placed within a breathing machine. However, the USFDA has approved the use of a vaccine that can and will be deployed during any future outbreaks of avian influenza.
