Influenza – which is more popularly known as the flu – derives its name from its causer, the influenza virus. This virus is responsible for causing infection in the breathing tracts – the characteristic condition of the influenza. This condition mainly occurs during the month of winter; as a result, it is important to get vaccinations for the flu in October – exactly one month before the winter starts.
There are three types of the influenza virus – the type A influenza virus, the type B influenza virus and the type C influenza virus. In addition, there are many strains of each type. All these make it impossible for anybody to be completely immune to the virus. As a result, it is very likely that an average American will catch flu every year and thus needs to take flu shots regularly.
The symptoms of the flu are less serious in children than in adults. However, children are at greater risk from developing flu since they have underdeveloped immune systems. The symptoms usually start after a period of three days from the day of catching the virus.
