World Health Organization (WHO) has a category for flu shots that gives priority to children, elderly, people with low immune system and chronic illness. Recently, people with cardio vascular complications have been included in that list. Because studies have shown that patients with heart disease can develop complications if they have the flu. And the best way to avoid this is by having the flu shot.
The flu shot is not harmful for cardio vascular patients by any means. Research has shown that the rate of flue-based complication is much higher for individuals with cardiac diseases. Patients who have the flu and sensitive heart can suffer from pneumonia which can lead to respiratory break down, heart failure and even death. Since flu leaves the body dehydrated, it takes a toll on pre existing conditions like asthma or diabetes.
It is safe to get the flu shot for cardiac patients. However the nasal spray vaccine is not prescribed for this case because it contains little amount of live virus and may react with heart conditions.
